Hi,
I have purchased the license and when I try to set to something in Change Soundoutput for Wolfson Audiocard i get
amixer: Control hw:sndrpiwsp open error: No such device9 timees
1. Dezember 2017 at 17:00 #32748Hi manul,
Unfortunately, the Wolfson card is not produced, updated or supported with most software, anymore.
You can install an older version of Max2Play to still run it (Legacy versions in our download page, version 2.26), but some time ago a Kernel update was not supported and shortly after that, Cirrus and Wolfson stopped manufacturing and actively supporting the card.
Since then, we amended our documentation to remove or qualify our support of Wolfson cards. Please let us know if we missed any statements on the card regarding Max2Play’s current version.
14. Januar 2018 at 4:16 #33399Hi,
Regardin Cirrus Logic being unsupported, I searched for and trawled through the Max2Play site but can find no reference to withdrawl of support.
Please advise where this annoucement is made in your documentation and how the withdrawl was communicated.I have a Wolfson/Cirrus Logic Audio Card (CLAC) and I ONLY paid for Max2Play to get this. My subscription is current.
Please note that if the correct driver is loaded (the one sans ‚-overlay‘ via config.txt it loads correctly resulting inaplay -l' shows it as
RPiCirrus‘. The name has changed from the previous driver and it would seem that if you simply changed your change the PHP code to reflect this it „should“ work. You might not be able to buy the card but the default raspi kernel supports it.
15. Januar 2018 at 15:59 #33445Hi drewt,
Yes, the kernel version of our legacy images does still support it and we recommend using this version at the moment to run a Wolfson Cirrus Logic card. All Audio Players will work as well as all our main features.
I will look into this possible fix, thanks for pointing this out. If it works, we will include it in the next beta.
15. Februar 2018 at 8:37 #34017Hi ,
I just purchased the license in order to use with my wolfson audio card. However, I have installed max2play v.2.26 but got same error „amixer: Control hw:sndrpiwsp open error: No such device“
pls advise how to fix it.
15. Februar 2018 at 16:06 #34025Hi thanat,
Just checked with our Stretch Beta image and it works right away. You can find the image on our download page. I tested Headset out.
16. Februar 2018 at 13:00 #34032I have installed the stretch beta image and tried to change audio output to headset or Line out but still got same error “no such device” .
I used the 1st wolfson audio card version.
25. Februar 2018 at 23:45 #34080Thanat,
As the card is now supported in the latest kernels it can be easily setup by just following the steps in this link http://www.horus.com/~hias/cirrus-driver.html meaning it should be a simple matter of accomodating it in Max2Play.I install MPD and use BubbleUPnP to conrol playback and set the maximum gain for headphone output using the command:
amixer sset "HPOUT1 Digital" -- -12dB
(See https://www.element14.com/community/message/215139/l/re-new-reworked-driver-for-wolfsoncirrus-logic-audio-card#215139).27. Februar 2018 at 17:29 #34115Hi guys,
Sorry about the late response. I am just now back from a holiday break for the last week.
@thanat: The playback should work right away through headphones. No change necessary@drewt: Thanks for pointing us in this direction, will check it out soon and see if it makes sense to integrate in Max2Play 🙂
11. März 2018 at 16:52 #34314A good reason for continuing support for the Wolfson card is there are still lots available to buy (over 1300 at the time of writing) and if you update to the 4.9 kernel, it is supported without the need for the legacy kernel change.
The advantage is that the older Wolfson card can be modified to work with the Raspberry Pi3 and since the cards are inexpensive it makes a great high quality streamer option, with more flexibility than most competing DAC cards.
13. März 2018 at 10:51 #34376Hi ALW,
Have you tried running the card with our newest version of Max2Play 2.45? It already has
#### KERNEL #### 4.9.39-v7+
2. Juni 2018 at 10:22 #36019Hi, I’m also getting the „amixer: Control hw:RPiCirrus open error: No such device“ error.
I’m running an old Wolfson Ver:A02 on Legacy Version 2.46 and Raspberry PI B.
When i select soundcard „Old Wolfson Cirrus Logic (kernelchange)“ it changes after reboot to „Cirrus logic new (kernel 4.4.+)“.
And I’m getting the „amixer: Control hw:RPiCirrus open error: No such device“.How do I proceed?
4. Juni 2018 at 13:48 #36052What kernel do you have displayed in the settings/reboot menu’s debug info?
7. Juni 2018 at 17:03 #36108Hi, it says #### KERNEL #### Linux max2play 4.9.39+ .
Correction: it’s running Legacy Version 2.4411. Juni 2018 at 9:30 #36148Could you try burning our new Stretch image and updating it to Max2Play version 2.46?
27. September 2018 at 6:26 #38091I thought I’d have another run at this after a lot of madness a few months ago. Installed latest M2P (2.47)
I want to use the SPDIF output. I can get line and headphone output no problem / no error
When I try for SPDIF I get the error below – SPDIF is what I need…
I have another problem which is that apache needs starting manually but that’s a minor annoyance compared to this one..
Any thoughts?

27. September 2018 at 10:40 #38103Hi Mike,
Please detail your steps thus far and the Raspberry Pi you are using.
Can you select the SPDIF output after installing the Wolfson driver?
27. September 2018 at 12:39 #38134Hi thanks – I did a clean install from your website today – dd of the image onto an 8Gb Class 10 Card. I then booted with the Wolfson card in place, HDMI connected and USB / Keyboard and Mouse too. No Wifi but wired RJ45. I had to start the web server manually as it didn’t start on boot (and still doesn’t). I turned off the Desktop and took the update to 2.47 option. I skipped sound card choice removed HDMI, Mouse, Keyboard.
On reboot. I SSH -l in as user PI and manually started the apache server [sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start]. I took the Raspberry settings option and added the Wolfson driver (for Kernel 4.4+) / reboot / manually start apache – I then tried to assign the output to SPDIF which is what caused the error message as posted. I then tried headphone and line output from the card and both of these options worked fine. Going back to trying the SPDIF option caused the same error again. Re-trying headphones and line out continue to work fine.
The Wolfson Card advertises itself physically as „Wolfson PI Audio Card Ver: A02“
The PI is a Pi B
M2P is version 2.47BTW- The device used to work fine on Squeezeplug until I decided to update in a fit of misplaced enthusiasm !
Thanks for the quick reply – what more do you need ?
Best wishes
Mike

27. September 2018 at 12:47 #38135I assume you meant 8 GB, your Pi as a Raspberry Pi 1 model B+ or a 2B or 3B?
27. September 2018 at 13:00 #38136oops showing my age. 8Gb confirmed! Filesystem auto-expanded
Pi is Raspberry Pi Model B Rev 2 according to cat /sys/firmware/devicetree/base/model and „P5“ next to the pins on the back of the board

27. September 2018 at 14:18 #38140So it’s one of the older ones with yellow RCA and blue jack port? Then I’d assume the sound card is also the older Wolfson card without Cirrus Logic cooperation?
In this case, I would recommend trying the older legacy version based on jessie without updates.
If you intend to use the system as an audioplayer alone, this should probably give you the best result. Our newest version of Max2Play is primarily aimed at the Raspberry Pi 2B, 3B, 3B+, Zero and Zero W which are all still in production.
edit: Also, did you try the OLD driver for Wolfson or the new one?
Regardless, we will look into the driver’s error with our current image as well and see if we can recreate it and find a fix if it’s universal.
27. September 2018 at 15:04 #38155Thanks Yellow SPDIF and Blue 3.5mm jack on the Pi confirmed.
Happy to try Jessie and Audioplayer only option as this is exactly what I want it for. Just looking where I find and download Jessie… I’ve only tried the ’new‘ kernel 4.4 driver option so far – Trying to install the old kernel from where I am now did at least wake up the SPDIF port but only with nasty digital noise. The Web interface reports that it’s still the 4.4 new version so going to try clean reinstall from today’s download before Jessie
27. September 2018 at 16:02 #38171Ok slightly weird – Clean install from same download from earlier today. Install went into ‚emergency mode‘ but then seemed to recover. Apache started fine. Registered and turned desktop off. Went straight to Raspberry settings. Chose old kernel / reboot. Had to manually start apache. Set SPDIF in PI settings (output below). Reboot tried – „Previous Reboot status unknown – click Reboot again to force Reboot.“
Forced reboot – Reboot succesful Manual restart of apache needed – Set Advanced options in Squeezelite to hw-snd_rpi_wsp – Sound coming from headphone and line out. Digital noise from from SPDIF port.
