In the interim, my workaround was as follows:
Download the current stretch beta image and flash to a card
Boot the SD card in an RPI
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Use the kernel update facility in the gui.
Boot sdcsrd in RPI 3b+ – all should be well.
