Imageburner

Imageburner

The plugin Imageburner turns the Max2Play device into a SD card burner and administrates images copied from existing SD card installations. You can learn more about its requirements and features in the plugin gallery.

Step 1

Download and install the plugin from the plugin gallery. Afterwards, a new entry appears in the menu of the Max2Play user interface.

Step 2

Plug the SD card you want to write on or to copy in your SD card reader and connect the card reader with the Max2Play device.

Step 3

Click Imageburner to enter the plugin’s menu. The page loading time seems to be unusually long, but please be patient. When you do this for the first time, that is directly after the plugin’s installation, some additional software gets downloaded and installed. Finally, the Imageburner page appears. If your SD card reader is recognized properly, the first section with the image list (which is of course empty at the moment) tells you the SD card device ready for burning is sda. If you use several card readers at once, it might say sdb or sdc instead.

Step 4

Add images to the list. To create an image from the SD card plugged in the card reader, look for the section to create images from SD cards. First of all, enter a name and save location for the image file to be created, for example „/home/pi/mp2_hifiberry_227.img“. If you plan to burn the image lateron instead of saving storage space, leave „Create zip file“ unchecked. To add the copied image zu the image list, tickle the „Add image to burning list“ box to open two more fields for the image’s name and description. Following the previous example, add „Max2Play HiFiBerry Image“ for the name. For the description, it might be a good idea to add information about the image version and configurations already made. Therefore, enter a description like „2.27, all settings and configurations done“.

Important: Make sure to only backup images whose filesystem has not been expanded yet if you use SD cards with differenz sizes. It does not make sense to create an image of an 8 GB SD card if you plan to switch to 32 GB cards because you no longer have the possibility to expand the filesystem!

Click „Create Image“ to copy the SD card to the Max2Play device and to add it to the image list.

To add existing image files (img or zipped img) already stored on the Max2Play device, however, look for the section to add a new image from an existing file. Enter the name, file path on the Max2Play device and description like explained above and hit „Save“ to add the image including the meta data to the list. Afterwards, it appears under the image we have created from the SD card before.

If you don’t need the images anymore, click on „Delete“ to remove them from the list and the device.

Step 5

Important: To prevent data loss, make sure you disconnect all USB memory devices like thumb drives or USB hard drives! Of course, the only exception is the card reader you want to burn with. Additionally, open the Imageburner menu only on one device at once. Remember that each click triggers that Max2Play looks for new SD card readers!

If you want to burn the image on another SD card than you copied it from, unplug the card reader from the Max2Play device. Then, change the SD card in the card reader and plug it in the Max2Play device again. To make sure Max2Play still recognizes your card reader, click on „Imageburner“ again in the menu bar and check the image list for the sda. If yes, hit the „Burn“ button in front of the imge you want to burn on the SD card. If the inserted SD card has not been formatted or empty before, the Imageburner will first overwrite it with zeros which prolongs the burning time significantly.

Step 6

Configure the fresh image right from the plugin’s menu. Right after burning, look for the section to set the SD card properties. If you want to, you can alredy configure certain features of the Max2Play image before the first launch. Dependent on your equipment, enter your Max2Play premium license, choose the sound card from the drop-down list you have mounted on the Max2Play device and expand the filesystem of the SD card by tickling the „Resize filesyxstem and add 3. Partition“ box.
